Cryollite Na3AlF6 is soluble in water. BF3 gas is passed into the solution of cryolite the 
 stronger Lewis acid BF3 takes up F- ions from cryolite precipitating insoluble AlF3. In this 
 process the products formed are BF4 and AlF3. The hybridisation of boron changes from 
 sp2 to sp3 and that of aluminium sp3d2 in the complex changes during the formation of 
 ionic compound.
