When a brine solution (sodium chloride dissolved in water) is subjected to electrolysis, the following gases are liberated:

  1. At the anode (positive electrode): chlorine gas (Cl2) is liberated. This is because chloride ions (Cl-) are oxidized to form chlorine gas, according to the following reaction:

2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-

  1. At the cathode (negative electrode): hydrogen gas (H2) is liberated. This is because water molecules (H2O) are reduced to form hydrogen gas and hydroxide ions (OH-), according to the following reaction:

2H2O + 2e- → H2 + 2OH-

So the overall reaction for the electrolysis of brine can be written as:

2NaCl + 2H2O → Cl2 + H2 + 2NaOH

Note that sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is also produced as a byproduct of the electrolysis process.
