Concerning the reaction of nitric acid and copper, concentrated nitric acid oxidises copper to form Cu2+ ions. Nitrogen dioxide, toxic brown gas with an offensive odour, is created when nitric acid is decreased. In this reaction, cupric nitrate, CuNO32, is also produced. The reaction is as follows:
Cu+4HNO3CuNO32+2NO2+2H2O
