In 1857, a major revolt broke out in Meerut against the British. The main reason for the revolt was the new cartridge in the arms. It was believed that cartridges used for these new rifles were greased with the fat of cows and pigs. These cartridges need to be removed during the firing process with the help of the mouth. It hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Muslims among the sepoys. They refused to use it. But it was not the only cause. The Indians were frustrated about the various policies and decisions of British Rule. It was a reaction because of many accumulated reasons.
