On October 1st, 1953, the newly formed state of Andhra came into being. It all started when Potti Sriramulu began a hunger strike and sought to establish an Andhra state from the then Madras Presidency to protect Telugu speakers' rights. Later with the recommendations of the States Reorganization Commission, Andra was merged into the Hyderabad region to form a new state called Andhra Pradesh in 1956.
