The Antyodaya Anna Yojana was launched in December of 2000. It aimed to focus on people living below the poverty line. Among several schemes introduced by the government to eradicate poverty and promote food security, the Antyodaya Anna Yojana is considered to be one of the most important ones. Over one crore of poor families from BPL were covered under this scheme. Food grains at a highly subsidized rate are made available, which includes wheat for as low as 2 rupees per kg and rice for as low as 3 rupees per kg to all eligible families.
