Detailed Solution

General Parvez Musharraf led a military coup in Pakistan in October 1999. Musharraf gained national notoriety when he was promoted to 4-star general by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1998, placing Musharraf in the militia's top spot. The 1999 coup in West Pakistan was a bloodless coup in which the Pakistani army, and then-army leader and the chairman of the personnel committee, General Pervez Musharraf, seized political authority from the civilian government of the popularly elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 12 October 1999. He declared himself the Chief Executive of the country and later changed his designation to the President.
