During World War I, Indian industrial growth shoot up dramatically. The First World War radically altered the world's circumstances. Manchester imports into India decreased as British mills focused on producing goods for the war effort and the army. All of a sudden, Indian mills had a sizable domestic market to serve. The need for jute bags, fabric for army uniforms, tents, leather boots, horse and mule saddles, and a variety of other things increased as the war dragged on, and Indian industries were relied upon to meet the demand. Both new and existing plants operated in several shifts. Everyone was required to work greater hours and many new employees were hired. Industrial production expanded during the war years.
