Detailed Solution

In 1789, Louis XVI called for a meeting to discuss France's financial and political state.
Louis XVI was forced to raise taxes due to France's poor financial condition. The monarch did not have the sole authority to impose tariffs on France during the Old Regime. Instead, he had to convene a meeting of the Estates-General to vote on his new tax ideas. The three estates each sent representatives to the Estates-General, a governmental body. However, the king was the only one who had the authority to schedule meetings of this body. Louis XVI convened a meeting of the Estates-General on May 5, 1789, to approve plans for increased taxes. To accommodate the delegates, Versailles erected a magnificent hall.
