Detailed Solution

In 1797 Napoleon invaded Italy.
In 1797, Napoleon's French Army of Italy attacked Italy, determined to push the First Coalition out of Sardinia and Austria out of Italy. Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia needed to sign a cease-fire in about fourteen days. From that point onward, Napoleon appeared in Milan, where he was welcomed like a saviour. The Cisalpine Republic, which changed its constitution to permit the French First Consul Napoleon to become president, prevailed over Napoleon's Italian Republic. While a constitution offered the republic some independence, it was generally constrained by Napoleon and by Napoleon's replacement to the Cisalpine Republic, a brief republic in Northern Italy (1802-1805).
