Detailed Solution

Napoleon's French Army of Italy invaded Italy in 1796. Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia had less than two weeks to sign an armistice. Napoleon then landed in Milan, where he was received as a liberator. Napoleon's Italian Republic replaced the Cisalpine Republic, which changed its constitution to allow the French First Consul Napoleon to become president. While a constitution provided some autonomy to the republic, it was primarily controlled by Napoleon.
