Detailed Solution

Napoleon invaded Italy in 1797.
Napoleon waged a series of invasions across Europe to establish France's sovereignty. In 1779, he invaded Italy as a military leader, kicking off the Napoleonic Wars. He considered himself a modernizer of Europe and hence led an expedition to dominate those countries. The battle was fought between the French and Austrian armies. He wished to expel Austria from Italy. Napoleon annexed areas such as Nice, Tuscany, Piedmont, Aosta, and others. He extended his Napoleonic codes to these areas, creating a sense of togetherness among the Italian people. Napoleonic unification is seen as one of the elements in the rise of nationalism among the Italian people, culminating in Italy's emergence as a nation-state.
