Detailed Solution

Nicholas II resigned on March 2, 1917. Czar Nicholas II was compelled to resign in March 1917 after the army garrison in Petrograd joined the striking workers in calling for socialist reforms. First kept at the Czarskoe Selo palace, Nicholas and his family were later kept in the Yekaterinburg palace close to Tobolsk. On March 8, 1917, riots broke out in Petrograd (St. Petersburg). Nicholas gave the city commandant strict orders and dispatched troops to reestablish order. The army-backed the Duma's call for the emperor to step down after the cabinet resigned.
