Potti Sriramulu died on December 15th 1952. He died after fasting for fifty-eight days. He was a veteran Gandhian leader who went on a hunger strike to demand the formation of the Andhra state to protect the interests of Telugu speakers in the year 1952. His death engulfed the entire Andhra in chaos, and the protests were so intense that the central government had to give in to their demand. Thus, the newly created state of Andhra, later known as Andhra Pradesh, was established on October 1st, 1953.
