Rinderpest arrived in Africa in the late 1880s. Africa used to have a lot of lands and a tiny population. For many centuries, they rarely worked because land and cattle provided their food. For example, Italian troops in East Africa conquering Eritrea were fed bad livestock smuggled from British Asia. Rift Valley fever moved westward like a forest fire from the east until it reached Africa's Atlantic coast in 1892. It landed at Cape Town, Africa's southernmost tip, five years later. Rinderpest killed 90% of the animals near the road. The loss of cattle harmed African livelihoods. Planters, mining owners, and colonial administrations successfully monopolised the remaining cattle resources to strengthen their power and drive.
