Detailed Solution

The British conquered Awadh in 1801.
The British used various ways to get the territories of the Indian rulers. The tools they used were hereditary policy and subsidiary alliance. They often took over the kingdom by pointing out that it was misadministered. According to the hereditary rule, only the king's biological son can inherit the throne. Similarly, the Subsidiary Alliance helped the British to cement their position within the territory of the Indian ruler. In the case of Awadh, the British Governor-General Dalhousie annexed Awadh in 1801. He justified it by pointing to the state's internal crisis, political instability, and overall misadministration. And that only British rule can make the scenario better.
