The British seized Jhansi in 1859. According to the Doctrine of Lapse, only the biological son of the King can inherit the state and throne. In reality, it was an instrument used by the British to expand and annex the territory in the hand of Indian rulers and strengthen British rule. Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi wanted the company to recognize her adopted son as the heir to the throne after the death of the King. But, the British did not accept him on the grounds that he was her adopted son which led to a conflict and battle between Rani of Jhansi and the British, ultimately the death of Rani Lakshmi Bai.
