The Britishers decided to reserve the forests in 1905.
They believed that shifting cultivation, hunting, overgrazing and so on were highly detrimental to their economic interests in the country. Naturally, the people were not happy with this. So the administration assured the populace that they were welcome to remain in the allocated areas to calm them., provided they would provide the British with free labour in the forests. But this was unsatisfactory because the people of Bastar had a very intimate connection with the woods. Hence they could not tolerate anyone else interrupting their ways of life.
