Detailed Solution

The winter of 1929–30 saw the start of extensive collectivisation. Stalin demanded on December 27, 1929, that the party "liquidate the kulaks as a class," The Central Committee decided that "an enormous majority" of the peasant homes should be collectivised by 1933. Stalin started the collectivisation program in response to severe grain supply constraints and antiquated industrial methods. Through this pThroughgram, farmers were compelled to work on Kolkhoz or communal farms. Resistance to the collectivisation scheme resulted in harsh punishment, including many deportations and exiles. Most historians concur that the Great Famine of 1932–1933 was greatly exacerbated by collectivisation, particularly in Ukraine, an area renowned for its fertile soil. They also credit peasants' opposition to collectivisation for their considerable role (chernozem). Ukrainian speakers refer to this period as "Holodomor."
