The Company took over Awadh in 1856.
Under Lord Dalhousie, who served as Governor-General from 1848 until 1856, a wave of annexations took place. The British had a justification for taking over Awadh: they claimed they were "obligated by duty" to do so to free the people from the "misgovernment" of the Nawab. The people of Awadh joined the massive uprising erupted in 1857, incensed at the humiliating manner in which the Nawab was removed.
