When did the Constitution of India come into effect?

The Constitution of India came into effect on 26th January 1950, marking the day when India formally became a sovereign, democratic republic. This date was chosen deliberately to honor the historic Purna Swaraj declaration of 1930, symbolizing complete independence from British rule. On this day, the provisions of the Constitution replaced the Government of India Act, 1935, as the country’s governing document. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as India’s first President, and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision for an egalitarian and democratic nation came to life. Since then, 26th January is celebrated annually as Republic Day across India.
