The First Battle of Tarain took place in 1191. In the twelfth century, the Chahamanas sometimes referred to as the Chauhans, ruled over the areas of Delhi and Ajmer. Prithiviraj Chauhan, one of his dynasty's most notable and significant kings, engaged in combat with the Ghurids, a Turkish clan led by Mohammad Ghori that attempted to invade the subcontinent. The Rajput confederacy, led by their monarch Prithiviraj Chauhan, engaged the Ghurid armies, under the command of Mohammad Ghori, in the First Battle of Tarain in 1191. After winning this conflict, the Rajputs temporarily prevented the Ghurid armies from invading the area.
