In July 1830, France saw its first uprising. The liberal revolutionaries who formed a constitutional monarchy with Louis Philippe as its leader overthrew the Bourbon kings who had been restored to power after the conservative reaction following 1815. Liberalism and nationalism became more and more connected with the revolution in many areas of Europe as conservative regimes sought to maintain their hold on power. Thus liberal nationalists who belonged to the educated middle-class elite, including professors, teachers, clerks, and members of the commercial middle classes, led these revolutions. This July Revolution eventually sparked an uprising in Brussels too.
