The First World War began on the 25th of July, 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. It was his murder that fired up the war across the European subcontinent, which lasted till 1918. During this time, the European continent was divided into two major powers. Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire remained the Central power, whereas Great Britain, the United States, Japan, Canada, Romania, Italy, Russia, and France were called the Allied power. By the war ended, the Allied powers claimed victory, but it cost the lives of 16 million people, including soldiers and civilians.
