Gangadhar Rao, who was the 5th king of Jhansi, died in 1853. He was Raghunath Hari Newalkar's ancestor and the son of Shiv Rao Bhau (the first governor of Jhansi under Maratha rule). He was a competent administrator who helped Jhansi's financial situation, which had worsened under his predecessor's rule. He took corrective action to ensure the growth and prosperity of the town of Jhansi. He was in charge of a force of about 5,000 soldiers. His statesman-like skills struck even the British; he was wise, diplomatic, and a lover of art and culture.
