Due to the large-scale revolt against him, Louis XVI decided to recognise the National Assembly. He reluctantly agreed to get his powers under the check of a Constitution formulated by this National Assembly. The Constitution's drafting was finished in 1791 by the National Assembly. Its primary goal was to restrict the monarch's authority. Thus instead of being concentrated in the hands of a single individual, these powers were now divided between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. As a result, France became a constitutional monarchy. In addition, this Constitution allowed the National Assembly to formulate laws indirectly.
