Detailed Solution

Between 1783 and 1789,  the production of indigo in the world fell by half. When Britain started to industrialise, its cotton production dramatically increased, leading to a huge increase in the demand for cloth dyes. Indigo supplies from the West Indies and America declined for a number of reasons as demand for the dye rose. Hence, global indigo production decreased by half between 1783 and 1789. British cloth dyers scrambled to find new indigo sources and eventually turned to India. The need for Indian indigo increased by the end of the eighteenth century.
