Detailed Solution

In May 1857, a revolt broke out in Meerut.
The East India Company faced a massive revolt at Meerut in 1857. The main reason for the uprising was the introduction of a new kind of cartridge. The sepoys believed that the cartridges used for the new rifles were greased with the fat of cows and pigs. They needed to remove the cartridges by mouth during the firing process. So they refused to use it as it hurt the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Muslims Sepoys. The Indians were also frustrated with the various policies of British Rule, like the annexation of Awadh, promotion of Christianity, discrimination faced by Indian sepoys etc. However, it started as a sepoy mutiny, a reaction to many accumulated reasons, and gradually many others from different parts joined the revolt.
