Samanthas emerged in the seventh century.
Samanthas referred to big landlords or warrior chiefs present in the different regions of the Indian subcontinent. The Samanthas served the kings as subordinates and were expected to bring gifts to kings. Their duties included being at the courts and providing the king with army and military support whenever needed. Later, when samantas gained power and wealth, they declared themselves maha-Samanthas. They were also known as mahamandaleshwar, which meant ‘ the great lord of a circle or region’.
