The Santhal uprising happened in 1855 in Jharkhand against the British. This tribal community reared cocoons in the area of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. The Silk traders sent agents to these tribes to give them loans and collect cocoons. But these cultivators were paid less, whereas in the markets they were sold at five times the price. Apart from this, the forest rules restricted their movement in and out of the forest which made it difficult to collect the forest products. These reasons made them revolt against the British in 1855.
