The Songram Sangma revolt happened in 1906.
With the condition that village residents would be required to work for the Forest Department and maintain the forests, the colonial government in India decided to grant small plots of land to jhum cultivators so they could cultivate in the forests. The Forest Department constructed forest villages throughout many regions to ensure a consistent supply of inexpensive labour. These colonial forest laws sparked criticism among numerous tribal groups. They disobeyed the new laws, carried on with illegal behaviour, and occasionally they openly rebelled. Such rebellions included Songram Sangma's uprising in Assam in 1906 and the Central Provinces' forest satyagraha in the 1930s.
