Detailed Solution

  • Helium exhibits a heating effect in Joule-Thomson expansion due to its very lower inversion temperature of it. Other gases exhibit a cooling effect in Joule-Thomson expansion as work of expansion (during adiabatic expansion) is done at the expense of the internal energy.
  • The inversion temperature in thermodynamics is the temperature below which a non-ideal gas (all gases in reality) that is expanding at constant enthalpy will experience a temperature decrease, and above which will experience a temperature increase.
