The facets of a diamond act as a prism to refract light and split it into its spectral rainbow colors. If a beam of white light is passed through a triangular glass prism, the white light splits to form a band of seven colors on a white screen. This process of white light dispersing into its component colors is known as dispersion. The seven colors of the spectrum are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.  Hence, when light passes through a diamond, it splits into different colors.
