When mining is done by family members in the form of a long narrow tunnel, it is known as rat hole mining. It involves digging very small tunnels, usually only 3 to 4 feet high, where workers enter and extract coal. It is an old and hazardous method of mining coal. The coal is taken out manually to a nearby area, from where it is carried to larger coal dumps for trade purposes. Since the 1980s, rat-hole mining has been primarily practised in the region of Meghalaya. However, since 2014, it has been considered illegal by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and banned in Meghalaya.
