Detailed Solution

When Mughal rulers like Babur, Humayun and Akbar ruled over India, it was called the mediaeval period. Indian historians made the periodisation of Indian history to display the characteristics of time. They divided the history of India into three periods: Ancient, Mediaeval, and Modern. The mediaeval period was divided from the modern based on certain characteristics:
  • The notion of the modern period was borrowed from the west, which was characterised by the growth of modern elements like equality, democracy, science, technology, etc.
  • The mediaeval period was marked by the period when the modern period didn’t exist.
  • Thus, the rule of Mughals like Babur, Humayun, and Akbar was regarded as the mediaeval period because it didn’t have any modern characteristics.
