  • When heated with zinc dust, phenol undergoes a reduction process and transforms into benzene.
  •  Initial hydrogen loss will result in the formation of the phenoxide ion. As zinc's electrons are taken up, the hydrogen ion that has generated becomes a hydrogen radical. Later, when the connection between carbon and oxygen breaks, phenyl radical is produced. This radical then reacts with a hydrogen radical to form benzene.
