When sound enters from a solid medium to a gaseous medium its speed decreases.
The sound is produced by the vibrations of the inter particles of the object. Sound waves are mechanical waves which need media for propagation. The closer the particles, the faster the energy transfer between the particles, and the higher the speed of sound waves. Solids are dense materials than gases. So, the speed of the sound in gas will be less than that of a solid. So, the speed will decrease.
