Detailed Solution

When sound travels in a medium, the particles of the medium do not move but the disturbance moves.
Sound waves must pass through a medium like a solid, liquid, or gas. Sound waves move through these mediums by vibrating the molecules within them. Solids have very tightly packed molecules. Liquids are less densely packed than solids. Gases are also very loosely packed. Sound travels much faster through a solid than through a gas due to the spacing of the molecules. For example, in water, sound travels four times faster and four times farther than it does in air.
