Birsa Munda was arrested in 1895. The political objectives of the Birsa movement led by Birsa included driving out Christian missionaries, moneylenders, Hindu landlords, and the British government to establish a Munda Raj with Birsa at its head. British land policies destroyed the Mundas' traditional land system, Hindu landowners and moneylenders took over their land, and missionaries criticised their traditional way of life. The British government decided to take action as the movement grew. They jailed Birsa in 1895, tried him for rioting, and sentenced him to two years in prison.
