FICCI was established in 1927.
During World War I, Indian businessmen and manufacturers generated large profits and prominence. They wanted protection from foreign goods imports and a Rupee Sterling foreign exchange ratio that discouraged imports. To coordinate commercial interests, they established the Indian Industrial and Commercial Congress (in 1920) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI) ( in 1927). They provided financial help while refusing to acquire or sell foreign items. Most businesspeople saw Swaraj as a period when colonial restraints on business would be lifted, and commerce and manufacturing would thrive without limits. However, following the collapse of the Roundtable meeting, business organisations were no longer unanimously enthused. They were concerned about the development of militant actions and the long-term interruption of commerce.
