Hector was shot dead in 1976. Separation based on race is what apartheid entails. South African people were split into white, black, Indian and coloured races. It was against the law for people of different races to mix, live close together, or even use the same amenities. One black township was the South Western Township (Soweto). Hector Pieterson resided here, and he and his friends joined the protest against studying the Afrikaans language in school. This was the language that the whites spoke. Hector and other school children were being forced to study this language, but they wanted to learn their language, Zulu. The South African police beat the demonstrators mercilessly and fired at the crowd. One of their shots murdered Hector. We're talking about the 16th of June, 1976, here.
