Ireland was included in the United Kingdom in 1801.
As a result of the Act of Union (1707) between England and Scotland, England effectively exerted its influence on Scotland by creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain. English lawmakers began to dominate the British parliament. However, the Irish experienced a similar fate to the Scots. With a parliamentary majority, the English were able to repress other ethnic groups. The English assisted the Irish Protestants in establishing their rule over a predominantly Catholic nation. Uprisings against British rule were put down. Thus, Ireland was absorbed into the United Kingdom in 1801 following a failed uprising led by Wolfe Tone and his United Irishmen.
