Detailed Solution

In 1848, it was decided to abolish slavery and free the slaves in the French colonies.
Slavery in France received little criticism during the seventeenth century. So the National Assembly undertook prolonged discussions on whether or not all French people, including those in the colonies, should be granted human rights. But it refrained from doing so because of concern for the reaction of businesses whose livelihoods depended on the slave trade. Finally, in 1794, the Convention passed legislation that abolished slavery throughout all French overseas holdings. It, however, proved to be a temporary solution since, ten years later, Napoleon brought back slavery. In the French colonies, slavery was eventually abolished in 1848.
