In 1905, the British decided to set aside some forests.
The British claimed that the indigenous people's lifestyles, such as shifting agriculture, hunting, and overgrazing, were seriously harmful to their economic interests in the nation. So in 1905, the colonial powers recommended setting aside two-thirds of the forest and ending shifting farming, hunting, and gathering of forest products. But the local people had a very close relationship with the forests. Moreover, the tribals regarded the forest as holy and could not stand for anyone interfering with their way of life. So to appease the public, the authorities informed them that they could remain in the designated lands as long as they gave the British free labour in the forests.
