In 1699, the Khalsa became institutionalised by Guru Gobind Singh. Khalsa Panth (Sikh community) became a political entity.
The number of followers of Baba Guru Nanak kept increasing even after his death, under his successors. They were mainly traders, agriculturalists, craftsmen, and artisans. They all raised funds for the community. Ramdaspur (now Amritsar) developed around the central Gurudwara- Harmindar Sahib (Golden temple) by the early seventeenth century. It was very much self-governed and was like a state within a state. Due to their ability to self-govern, Jahangir saw them as a threat and got Guru Arjan executed in 1606. However, his execution further politicised the community.
