Detailed Solution

Project Tiger was launched in 1973. It was due to the rapid decline of the tiger population from 55000 to 1827. It was a well-developed wildlife campaign whose word spread worldwide. The campaign was a success and led to a significant increase in the tiger population over the years. In 1993, there was yet another drop in the tiger population due to illegal trading. This was repeated in 2011. The country has around 53 tiger reserves to conserve the remaining tiger population. Project Tiger aimed to conserve the tigers of India and Nepal, which formed most of the world's tiger population. The Sunderbans in West Bengal, Periyar in Kerala, and Manas in Assam are some of the Indian tiger reserves.
