Punjab was annexed under British rule in 1849.
The British desired to establish their grip over the northwest due to their concern regarding Russian growth. Between 1838 to 1842, they fought a protracted war with Afghanistan and installed indirect Company administration there. In 1843, Sind was taken over. Punjab was next in line. However, the Company was slowed somewhat by Maharaja Ranjit Singh's presence. Two protracted conflicts with the Sikh Empire were fought after his passing in 1839. Finally, Punjab was annexed in 1849.
