Detailed Solution

In 1829, Sati was banned. Sati was a practice that existed in India 200 years ago. During those Times small girls were married at a very young age. Men were allowed to marry more than one wife but women were not allowed. Widowed women who chose to die by burning on the funeral pyre of their husbands were well praised by society and were considered virtuous. The practice of burning widowed women was known as Sati. Widows who chose not to die were restricted on many auspicious occasions. Raja Ram Mohan Roy started a campaign against Sati. He was a well-educated man. He knows languages like Sanskrit, Persian, and other Indian and European languages. He showed the people that the practice of widow burning has no sanction in any of the standard ancient texts.
