Detailed Solution

Sinhala was recognized as the official language of Sri Lanka in 1956.
The Sinhala speakers make up the majority in Sri Lanka as a result they have a political dominance in the country. The democratically elected government adopted a series of various majoritarian measures to ensure their community's supremacy. In 1956, the government passed an act recognising Sinhala as the official language disregarding Tamils. This led to a preferential policy towards the Sinhala speakers in Jobs and education opportunities and caused discontent among Tamil speakers.
