Detailed Solution

In 1956, Sinhala was recognised as the official language of Sri Lanka.
In the island nation of Sri Lanka, a series of majoritarian measures were taken by its government in the aftermath of its independence from the British in 1948. Its population consists of two major social groups: Sinhala speakers (74%) and Tamil speakers (18%). The leaders of the Sinhala community used their population to impose their dominance. They forced the government to declare Sinhala as the sole official language of the country in 1956 through an Act.
